Pope Benedict’s Easter Message

Pope Benedict XVI said today in his Easter message “Urbi et Orbi”, from the Vatican, that “diplomacy and dialogue must replace weapons” in Libya, transmit international news agencies.

In his Easter message, the Pope launched an appeal to all countries to show solidarity with “many exiled people and refugees from Africa, who, having fled from violence, dictatorship are trying to rebuild their lives European countries.

Benedict XVI spoke about the role of youth in building a tolerant democracy in their country. “Whether in the states of North Africa or in the Middle East, all citizens – especially young people – have to do everything in their power to promote the common good and build a society where poverty will be defeated and where each policy choice to be inspired by respect for human beings”, said the Pope.

In front of over 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Benedict XVI then gave the blessing “Urbi et Orbi” in 65 languages.

Revolutions and war

Revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, and the war in Libya determined tens of thousands of people to leave their countries and try to reach Europe across the Mediterranean aboard boats, putting their lives in danger.

On the other hand, the war in Libya caused more than 550,000 people to flee to neighboring countries, especially Tunisia, Egypt and Niger, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
