The Plant with the Worst Smell in the World Has Bloomed for the First Time in 75 Years

For the first time in 75 years, the plant with the most hated smell in the world, named “corpse plant” has bloomed in Switzerland on Friday. Known to specialists as the Titan Arum, the plant has flowered in the Botanical Garden of Basel University, Switzerland. It is an important event for specialists, since the plant blooms only once in 100 years.

The plant with the world’s most hated smell has an impressive size: 2.4 meters tall; when the petals open, they go up to a diameter of 120 centimeters. It is assumed that the plant with the world’s worst smell will close in the coming days.

The plant radiates a rotting corpse odor which can be sensed from more than half a kilometer away. This plant originates from the rainforest of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The last time “corpse plant” has flourished in Switzerland was 75 years ago. There were only 134 such events registered worldwide.

The Botanical Garden of the Basel University was open in the last two nights to allow thousands of visitors to see the plant.
