The commando group that carried out the operation of killing Osama bin Laden was a team made up of soldiers from the U.S. Navy SEAL.
SEAL troops are among the best trained worldwide and SEAL Team Six was the main force involved in military action in Pakistan, according to ABC News.
American soldiers were taken to the Pakistani city Abbotaba by two helicopters that flew low-altitude in Afghanistan. A team of 25 soldiers landed on Sunday night. The commando group carried out the operation in just 40 minutes, after they spent most of the time obtaining information.
SEAL teams have started to operate since 1942, when military leaders decided to establish an elite team to search for beaches suitable for troops landing in the Second World War.
Duncan Smith, a SEAL spokesman, told ABC News that “a lot of such missions take place without the public ever learn about them”.
SEAL troops are usually charged with the most important and dangerous missions. In order to get into the famous SEAL, recruits go through a program of the toughest workouts designed to push the boundaries beyond any physical and mental level. Only one third of recruits pass the training and become members of SEAL.
With the expansion of the war against terrorism, the U.S. Navy needs more teams, but young people who meet SEAL standards are very difficult to find.
American President, Barack Obama, said in a TV intervention broadcast live in U.S. last night that he had authorized an operation against al-Qaida leader, during which there were no casualties among U.S. forces.
“Today I can tell the American people and the world that the United States carried out an operation to kill Osama bin Laden, al-Qaida leader”, said Obama.
Obama said that the U.S. military operation took place in Pakistan.
Bin Laden was killed in a shootout, and U.S. forces took over the corpse, said Obama, adding that the attack targeted a building in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
