U.S. Open Tennis: Serena Williams – champion for the fourth time

Serena Williams US Open 2012Serena Williams (USA) defeated today Viktoria Azarenka (Belarus), in New York by 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, and is the new champion of the U.S. Open. The tennis player who hits the ball with a force of a man climbed for the fourth time on the Flushing Meadows throne.

Serena Williams, 31 years old on September 26 and the fourth seed, gave the impression, throughout the competition, with a fast service and through sheer force, that there is no player that can beat her until the final act.

Viktoria Azarenka (23 years), number 1 player in the world, had a thriller match with Maria Sharapova in the semifinals and she looked nervous at the start of the championship match.

Encouraged by 23,000 spectators, Serena took quickly the first set with a heavy-handed serve and rock-solid returns. It took 34 minutes and it seemed that the final match will be over quickly! In the second set Victoria started with a break, and, by hitting Serena’s backhand, she managed to tie the match. In the decisive set, Viktoria won the first break to take a 2-1 lead, then, after 3-1, it was Serena’s turn to win the break and then tie to 3 games all. Viktoria won the break for a 5-4 lead, but the next three games went to Serena who looked stunned after winning the match.

The match was 2 hours and 18 minutes long, while the other six opponents were “executed” by Serena in 6 hours and 47 minutes. It was the second longest U.S. Open Championship after the 1981 final when Tracy Austin beat Martina Navratilova, a match that was stretched over 2 hours and 40 minutes.

For Serena it is the 15th Grand Slam win of her career, the second of the season after Wimbledon: 5 Australian Open (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010), one Roland Garros (2002), 5 Wimbledon (2002, 2003 , 2009, 2010 and 2012) and four U.S. Open (1999, 2002, 2008 and 2012).

Men’s final, tomorrow, will oppose Serb Novak Djokovic (3rd seed) and Andy Murray (4th seed).
