50 Percent of Men May be Infected with HPV

According to a study 50 percent of men from general population can have human papillomavirus which is also abbreviated as HPV being one of the reasons of cervical or other cancers.  United States researchers have emphasized that boys should be vaccinated against this virus.

As young women are advised to get the vaccine it is still being debated whether young men should get it or not as it is too expensive to justifying its usage.

This infection can cause cervical cancer in women which is quite common in them throughout the world but it can also cause neck, anal or penile cancer and vaccinating against it can prevent it.

In a study done by Anna Giuliano in a cancer center in Florida with her colleagues, it was asserted that high volume of HPV infection was found in men in a sample research from Mexico, United States and Brazil.  It was also revealed by the research team that men get HPV infection just like women and around 6 percent of males get HPV which can cause different cancers in males as well as cervical cancer in females.

Vaccines manufactured by GlaxoSmith Kline and Merck & Co are equally effective against HPV.

According to Giuliano during a telephonic interview, the biology of men is just like women’s, the only difference is men having high ratio of genital HPV during their lifetime.  She also added that apparently women were much better in clearing the infection as they get older in contrast to males who apparently did not have the ability to do so.

The vaccination among boys has gained speed after the study, according to the vaccine experts.  Currently in United States Gardasil vaccination is being recommended for girls as well as women in the age group of 11 to 26.
