Marjorie Scardino is the first woman named to Twitter board

Marjorie ScardinoMicroblogging platform Twitter announced Thursday that it named Marjorie Scardino to its board. According to a Twitter announcement, the company is delighted to welcome to Marjorie Scardino to the board. In turn, Marjorie Scardino wrote on this occasion her first time a message on Twitter : “There couldn’t be a more exciting time in Twitter’s history to join.”

Scardino takes office immediately and will be a member of the audit committee of Twitter. Marjorie Scardino’s hiring comes after Twitter faced criticism for lacking women in top management positions.

Twitter’s board also includes Dick Costolo, chief executive officer and Peter Currie (former CFO of Netscape), Peter Chernin (former CEO of News Corp) and Peter Fenton (startup investor in Silicon Valley).

Marjorie Scardino, aged 66, born in Flagstaff, Arizona, received British citizenship in January 2002. She has extensive experience in media and education, as former executive director of the Pearson group, which owns, among other, Penguin Publishing and part of The Economist. Under the leadership of Marjorie Scardino, Pearson has become one of the largest companies in the world in its sector. She led Pearson for 16 years until the end of 2012. Marjorie Scardino was also for two years a member of the Nokia board.

Twitter Inc. is a social network company that provides microblogging services. The company was founded in 2006 as part of the Odeo company, continuing to operate on its own since April 2007. Twitter Inc. is headquartered in San Francisco and has more than 2,000 employees worldwide. Twitter is working on its advertising operations by giving marketers the option to reach Twitter users who are already interested in their products.

Twitter debuted November 7 on the New York Stock Exchange, at $45.1 per share, 73% above the initial public offering price of $26 per unit. Over 100 million daily users have posted so far a total of 300 billion tweets since the microblogging platform was founded in 2006.
