Today, Syrian Army tanks entered the city of Banias (northwest) – where President Bashar al-Assad’s regime is strongly challenged. Communications and electricity supply were interrupted, informed human rights activists.
Tanks are trying to move to the south neighborhood of the city, stronghold of the protesters, campaigners have said to AFP by telephone. Residents have formed human shields to stop the tanks advancing towards these areas.
Banias has been surrounded by the army for more than a week. On Wednesday evening, security forces have intensified the siege of the city, where thousands of people demonstrated against the Damascus regime.
Six protesters were killed yesterday in Syria, where thousands of people demonstrated on the streets. In the city of Homs five people died, and one victim had been recorded in the area of Hama, informs BBC, quoting eyewitnesses.
Thousands of members of the Syrian security services, backed by tanks and armored cars, entered last month the town of Deraa, to counter the anti-government revolt started in this city several weeks ago.
Call to Bashar al-Assad to organize free elections
Syrian protestors have proposed today, on Faceboook, to President Bashar al-Assad to have free elections within six months in order to end the crisis. “You will be the pride of contemporary Syria, if you could transform Syria from a dictatorship into a democracy. Syrians will be grateful”, writes a text published on “Syrian Revolution 2011″.
It’s for the first time when opponents of the regime are advancing detailed proposals in order to end an unprecedented movement of protest which killed 708 people, according to the “Committee of March 15 revolution martyrs”.
