Today, the rebels have taken control over the airport of Misrata, a key objective in western Libya, after violent clashes with forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gadhafi.
Hundreds of insurgents have celebrated the victory, after pro-Gaddafi forces have left the airport area, abandoning their tanks, which were burned down by rebels.
A representative of the National Transition Council, the supreme organ of the Libyan uprising, based in Benghazi, confirmed that the insurgents took control over the airport of Misrata, city situated 150 kilometers from Tripoli.
The head of a Libyan human rights organization, who recently arrived from Misrata, said that over 1,000 people were killed and at least 3,000 were injured in the last days in clashes in the Libyan port city. Earlier this month, after a violent offensive against insurgents, Gadhafi’s troops took control of Misrata, the third largest city in Libya.
New rocket attack in Tripoli
Rockets have targeted in the afternoon the eastern side of Libyan capital, Tripoli, after an intense aircraft overflying the area, a witness indicated to AFP.
A series of explosions occurred in the morning in the Libyan capital, bombed almost daily by NATO aircraft, which took the leadership of the international coalition military operations launched on March 19, in order to deter possible attacks of forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi against civilians.
