Pakistan: Parliament Urges U.S. to Stop Drone Attacks

Pakistan’s parliament asked today the U.S. to stop attacks of the CIA controlled drones against al-Qaida and the Taliban and an independent investigation of U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In a resolution adopted after 10 hours of debate, Pakistani parliament described drones attack as ‘unacceptable’. “These drone attacks must be stopped immediately. Otherwise, the government will be forced to consider appropriate measures, including withdrawal of NATO grant to transit to Afghanistan”, stressed the MPs, quoted by AFP.

The parliament also called on the government “to appoint an independent commission to investigate the Abbottabad operation,” the Pakistani city where Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden was killed the night of May 1/2 by a U.S. commando, and take “necessary measures to ensure that such an incident will not happen again”.

Initiated in 2004, CIA drone campaign intensified in the summer of 2008 and their actions became a daily routine in Pakistan in the past few months. In 2010, 100 attacks made over 670 deaths, according to military officers, but among them there were many civilians.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Thursday that the American drone attacks should be placed, for greater efficiency, under the supervision of Islamabad.
