High Concentration of Radioactive Iodine Found in the Thyroid Glands of Two Workers at Fukushima

High concentrations of radioactive iodine were detected in thyroid glands of two workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant, according to its operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

It is possible that the two workers 30 and 40 years old were exposed to radiation levels higher than the 250 millisievert limit.

TEPCO announced that it offers advice to workers involved in operations at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the earthquake and tsunami of March 11.

“Thyroid glands of the two workers show high levels of radiation”, announced TEPCO. There were detected levels between 9,760 and 7,690 becquerels iodine 131, ten times higher than those of other workers from Fukushima.

Internal contamination can occur only if a person swallows or breaths radioactive substances, not from external exposure.

According to the Jiji news agency, the two workers had worked at the plant in March and April. So far, those two employees have no symptoms and will be subjected to more detailed analysis.
