Apples are the fruits most contaminated with pesticides, says a report published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Experts recommend organic fruits.
Apples are the fruits that are the most contaminated with pesticides. Laboratory analysis showed that 92% of the tested fruits were infected with different types of pesticides.
“Apples are treated more intensively with different substances in order to last longer. Although the quantities of pesticides are not large, we do not know what effect could they have in the long-term”, say experts in the report. Furthermore, the contaminants are not completely eliminated even if you wash the fruits with a “special” shampoo.
Strawberries are the second in the contaminated fruits top, followed by grapes. The onion is the opposite, with the lowest concentration of pesticides.
The effects of pesticides: hormonal disorders and cancer
Eating daily five servings of vegetables and fruits with a low concentration of pesticides, can reduce by 92% the amount of pesticide ingested, say experts quoted in the report, and those who can not afford to buy organic vegetables and fruits are advised to eat pineapple, mango, avocado, corn and onions, as these vegetables are less contaminated.
Studies have shown that pesticides can affect the nervous system and can cause hormonal disorders and even cancer.
