White Children Are for the First Time a Minority in the U.S.

For the first time, minorities have a majority in the number of children in the United States, partly as a result of increasing age difference between white American adults and young American most predominant minority, which could change the government policies, reports Associated Press agency.

A previous census shows that the number of African-American households headed by single women – especially single mothers – currently exceeds that of the African-American married couples, a sign of the decreasing number of marriages in U.S., also increasing challenges for young single African-American mothers.

The results, based on the latest governmental data, provide an initial preview of the last census conducted in 2010 that will be released this summer. Demography experts state that the figures clearly confirm a change in the social order, one in which the racial and ethnic minorities will become majority in the U.S. until the middle of this century.

Currently, non-Hispanic whites represent less than half of all children 3 years old, the youngest age group mentioned in the latest annual survey – in 2009 – conducted by the Census Bureau. In 1990, more than 60% of children in this age group were white.

By contrast, white people are the vast majority of American adults – 80% of people around 65 years, and 75% of the population aged between 45 and 64, according to the above mentioned survey.
