London under siege: attacks and robberies extended east and south of British capital

Violence and looting have spread east and south of London, on the night of Sunday to Monday in a series of attacks that copy those of Tottenham, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, police said, quoted by Sky News.

Several shops in Brixton, south London were covered by looting and the fire brigade sent six units to extinguish a fire at a Foot Locker store in the area.
Other shops attacked by “small and mobile groups” as described by police are Currys, Halfords and Body Shop. Many people were seen carrying stolen goods, including TV sets. There was  looting at a mobile phone shop and a sporting goods store in Streatham.

Sporadic disturbances occurred in the north and east London, among the areas being attacked were Turnpike Lane, Walthamstow, Chingford and Leyton, where many shops were vandalized.

Three police officers were taken to hospital after being hit by a vehicle traveling at high speed, said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police. The officers have conducted arrests in Chingford Mount, Waltham Forest, after several young men robbed a store.

Police described the disturbance as “copied criminal activity”. “This is a challenging situation, with small areas of violence, looting and disorder that occurred in a number of neighborhoods”, said Commander Christine Jones. “We have mobilized all units in London and continue to act quickly to respond to any complaints about crime as soon as possible”, added Jones.

Over 100 people were arrested in connection with robberies in the east and south London, and at least nine policemen were injured, in addition to the 26 injured Saturday night.

Extension of violence comes after several young people were involved in clashes with police Sunday night, when officers with dogs were deployed to control groups of people.

The disorders occurred in the British capital after violent protests in Tottenham (North London), on the night of Saturday to Sunday, after which dozens of people were arrested and over 25 policemen injured. The violence erupted after a peaceful protest against the death of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old man, father of four, shot by police.
