Mitt Romney gets support from George W. Bush

Mitt RomneyMitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, is now in a better position in the race for Republican nomination for the White House after receiving, last week, the support of former U.S. president George W. Bush. Romney is the best choice for the Republican Party in an attempt to defeat Barack Obama in the presidential elections of November 2012, said Bush, a two term US president (2001 – 2009).

“I think Romney is the best choice for us. He is a good man, mature and reasonable – not a bomb launcher”, said former President cited by the New York Times. Support that Romney receives from Bush is an important incentive for him, especially since the announcement was made two weeks before the beginning of internal campaign to designate the Republican candidate in the race for the Whte House. Expressing his support for Romney, Bush criticized two of his opponents, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and former chairman of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. “I like Perry but he does not seem to go in any direction”, said Bush, and about Gingrich he said: “I’m not his fervent defender. He was not on my side when we had to adopt the law to increase taxes”.

Republican Party internal elections begin in less than two weeks in the key-state Iowa. A poll published today shows that in Iowa, Romney lead in voting intentions with 25 percent, while another potential presidential candidate, Ron Paul has 20%, and Newt Gingrich 17%. Aged 64, a businessman and politician, Romney launched into politics in 1992 as a Republican Senate candidate against Edward Kennedy. He was defeated, but obtained the best score ever against Kennedy – 41% of the votes. In 2002 he was elected Governor of Massachusetts, defeating Democrat Shannon O’Brien, but did not seek a second term in 2006. He took part actively in the campaign of George W. Bush (2004).

In primary elections in 2008 was trying to get the Republican nomination for, but lost to John McCain, who was defeated by Barack Obama. Now many Republicans believe that Romney is one of the few candidates who could beat Obama in the presidential election in November 2012.
