Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Wednesday that a “compromise” is not possible with China regarding the sovereignty of Senkaku Islands, claimed by Beijing. Noda said that China had misunderstood the disputed issues and he asked stopping the attacks against Japanese interests in China. These islands in the Eastern China Sea “are an integral part of our territory given our history and international law,” said Nada for journalists during the UN General Assembly.
“It is very clear that there are no issues of territoriality as such. Therefore there can not be a compromise that represents a return to the basic position. I have to state this clearly,” continued the Japanese leader.
China is disturbed by Tokyo’s refusal to reconsider its recent decision to nationalize the islands in this region claimed by the two Asian giants. The small archipelago is called Dinoyu by China, while Japan calls it Senkaku.
The nationalization “aimed at ensuring a stable management” of the archipelago, claimed the Japanese Prime Minister, pointing out that Tokyo has said “several times” to China that it will transfer ownership – private – of these islands to the Japanese state.
“It seems that China still needs to understand this and because of this lack of understanding, there has been an assault or acts of violence and destruction against nationals and Japanese goods” in China, he claimed.
“Under no circumstance violence shall not be justified and I asked China to defend these people and these goods,” Noda added.
China accused again Japan of “flagrant violation of the integrity of China” in a diplomatic meeting between leaders of the two countries on Tuesday evening in New York.
