John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, who made a legendary couple on the movie stage, sang together again for the first time since the musical “Grease” (1978), for a Christmas album, recorded with a host of stars in memory of the actor’s son, Jett, died in 2009.
“Olivia and I have always wanted to work together again… but unless it’s right and organic, it feels like you’re forcing something and I didn’t want anyone to feel that way,”
said John Travolta in an interview on Tuesday for Fairfax Media. He added:
“To join Olivia again, where we’ve succeeded at this level, to do that is a beautiful opportunity. I can’t believe it,”
The American actor and his Australian partner have played characters Danny and Sandy in “Grease”, a film made in 1978 based on the eponymous musical that brings on stage a group of teenagers in the ’50s.
They played in the movie song “You’re The One That I Want”, a piece of boogie-rock genre that sold tens of millions of copies worldwide.
“I like to sing and I do not have the opportunity to do that too often,”
said Travolta, who persuaded famous Barbara Streisand and Tony Bennett to record tracks for the album, entitled “This Christmas”.
The album includes a song recorded by John Farrar, composer of the song “You’re The One That I Want”. Proceeds will be donated to the John Travolta Foundation and the Olivia Newton-John Foundation, based in Melbourne, which fights cancer.
“For us it is a great way to support causes that are dear to us and give fans the opportunity to hear us playing together again,”
said Olivia Newton-John.
Jett Travolta died of brain seizure on January 2, 2009 during a vacation he spent with his family in the Bahamas. The teenager suffered from seizures since childhood.
John Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, have a daughter born in 2000 and another son born in 2010.
