French actor Gerard Depardieu recently decided to leave his homeland due to repeated increases in income tax by the Elysee leader, Francois Hollande.
Gerard Depardieu, famous among other things for his roles in the films “Cyrano de Bergerac” and “Asterix and Obelix”, bought a house in the Belgian village Nechin, near the border with France, according to the mayor, Daniel Senesael. He added that the actor was interested to start the procedure for permanent residence in Belgium.
Gerard Depardieu will join the Belgian community who adopted already approximately 2,800 French citizens, including Mulliez family, owner of the famous chain Auchan hypermarkets and the Decathlon, a store chain with sports profile.
Under Belgian law, residents do not pay tax on wealth, which in France is now applied to individuals with a wealth worth over €1.3 million.
“I think he wants to enjoy the atmosphere of Belgium, of our identity, the countryside, bucolic where we are,”
said Senesael for the radio station RTL.
According to British media, Depardieu’s decision to move from France to Belgium will not contribute anything to the image altered already by a series of embarrassing incidents. Last week, the actor was arrested for drunken driving after he fell off his scooter while driving on a street in Paris. In august, a driver has filed a criminal complaint against him after a violent altercation in which he was involved in Paris.
Gérard Depardieu is one of the most famous French actors, with more than 100 films in which he starred, including the series “Asterix”, but lately his name made the headlines for reasons not related to his artistic career.
In the summer of 2011, worldwide media wrote that French actor, suffering from urinary incontinence, was trying to urinate discreetly into a bottle because he was denied access to toilet as the plane – which operate on Paris-Dublin route – was getting ready to take off.
Gérard Depardieu won numerous prestigious awards throughout his career in film, including an Oscar nomination in 1990 for his memorable role in “Cyrano de Bergerac” and a Golden Globe for his role in the movie “Green Card” (1991).
