A week after the victory in court where it won $1 billion in damages from Samsung, Apple accused the South Korean group of patent infringement for four products, including two models of Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone. Apple accuses Samsung of the infringement of eight patents it holds and the complaint includes a list of 17 devices that Apple asked in February to be banned from selling in the U.S., according to The Verge portal.
According to a document submitted to the court, Apple cites “at least 21 new smartphones, media players and tablets launched by Samsung from August 2011 to August 2012.” Apple list contains 22 products, according to The Verge. Some of them were subject of the lawsuit that just ended, but are mentioned by Apple for infringement of other patents.
The four new Samsung products that Apple wants to stop from sale in U.S. are two Galaxy S III models, the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Note 10.1. Apple tried to ban sales of Galaxy S III in the U.S. in June, before the launching of the new smartphone, but the judge did not accept it because of problems related to the program. After the court victory last week, Apple is more determined to fight Samsung, and the language of the complaint leaves the door open to extend the ban to more Samsung products.
Many of the Samsung products that Apple has already stopped from selling are no longer on the market, and those that are on the market will not be banned sooner than December. It is expected a further tough action against products in Samsung’s current offer, with the goal of another victory in court or a settlement.
The list of Samsung products which Apple claims that infringe patents includes: Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III (Verizon), Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II (T-Mobile) , Galaxy S II (AT & T), Galaxy Nexus, Illusion, Captivate Glide, Exhibit II 4G, Stratosphere, Transform Ultra, Admire, Conquer 4G, Dart, Galaxy Player 4.0, Galaxy Player 5.0, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and Galaxy Table 8.9.
The American giant won last week in a federal court in California a lawsuit against Samsung. The jury decided that several South Korean company’s products infringe six patents of Apple in design and interface and required Samsung to pay damages of $1.05 billion.
Apple and Samsung are in court for 30 trials on 4 continents on patents for technologies used in the construction, design and interface for smartphones and tablet PCs. There is a tough rivalry between the two companies on the smartphone market, dominated by Samsung and iPhone products, while South Korean company remains one of the leading suppliers of electronic components to Apple, mainly chips memory and microprocessors, under contracts worth of billion dollars.
