President Barack Obama has described U.S. support for Israel as “sacrosanct” and underscored the need to help this country to keep their “military superiority” in place, four days before his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Obama, who attended a fundraising event for the presidential election campaign of November, referred, to the supporters, the geopolitical changes caused by popular uprisings in the Arab and Muslim world.
“One of our long term objectives in this area is to make sure that our sacrosanct commitment to Israel’s security does not mean only to provide capabilities that this country needs, not only to allow the kind of military superiority required in a very dangerous area”, said Obama. United States should cooperate with Israel “to try to support a country that could be sustainable in the region. And that’s tough”, Obama added.
Israel mentioned the possibility to launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear program on the grounds that Israel considers that is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, although Iran has continually denied this accusation.
Netanyahu, who will meet Monday with President Obama said the “main subject” of the meeting will be Iran. “Iran continues to advance rapidly and arrogantly in its nuclear program, without taking into account the decisions of the international community”, said Israeli Prime Minister, stating repeatedly that his country keeps “all options open” regarding this threat.
Benjamin Netanyahu is on a three-day visit, mostly private, in Canada. Israel and Canada have again asserted their strong friendship, however, Harper government made it clear that it doesn’t support a pre-emptive strike by Israel on Iran. Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister, said that Canada is looking forward to a peaceful solution to the Iranian-West nuclear stand-off.
