Claims to Freeze Mubarak’s Bank Accounts

Nearly 450,000 people signed a petition launched on the internet earlier this week by the non-profit organization Avaaz asking G20 countries to proceed with ‘freezing billions’ of Dollars that the ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has deposited in his bank accounts, said Friday the organization, during a rally in Paris.

About 10 members of the organization have gathered in Trocadero Square, near the Eiffel Tour and shown an armband that read “Freeze now Mubarak’s billions” in French and English, placed behind a stack of yellow cards suggesting a pyramid of gold bars,.

“We urge the G20 finance ministers, who meet in Paris this weekend to immediately freeze his assets to prevent their disappearance. Then they have to investigate how this money was obtained and be returned to the Egyptian people,” said Alex Wilks, a member of Avaaz.

According to the same non-governmental organization, and estimates made by Arab media, “Hosni Mubarak had stolen up to 70 billion dollars in 30 years of ruling his country.”

For the moment, Switzerland is the only country that has decided to freeze his assets held by the former Egyptian president resigned and his entourage.

The British government is also under pressure to freeze Mubarak’s properties and bank accounts.
