General Martin Dempsey sees dark clouds in Europe

General Martin DempseyCurrent Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, warns that Europe could face major violent protests amid economic crisis, stressing that “the euro area is exposed to serious danger”, writes BBC News Online. “We are extremely concerned about the health and viability of the euro because, to some extent, we are all exposed”, Dempsey said at a seminar organized by the Atlantic Council, based in Washington.

General Martin Dempsey recalled the importance of trade between Europe and the United States, but also “the risks that civic disorder would bring, threatening disintegration of the European Union”. Dempsey is not convinced that the measures taken Friday by the European Union will be able to maintain united the euro area, warning that disintegration would have serious consequences for the United States.

“The euro area faces a serious risk. I know that they have taken some measures with the 17 euro area members to better align at the monetary and fiscal level. But it is unclear, at least for me, whether this is the glue which will make them stick together”, the U.S. military official said.
