iPhone 4 S launched, but no iPhone 5 yet

iPhone 4 STim Cook: “Only Apple can combine these innovations in such a spectacular way”. “It has the same design, but inside is all new”.

We talk about the latest model of iPhone, which will be called “iPhone 4S”, said the new head of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Tim Cook, at the event “Let’s talk iPhone” held at the Cupertino headquarters in California today.

The new product is optimized for games, and is almost seven times faster, in terms of graphics, than the iPhone 4. The novelty consists in the voice command, an application which is called Siri. Apple shares, traded on Nasdaq, immediately fell almost 5% after the iPhone 4S launch announcement.

iPhone 4S will sell for the same price as the iPhone 4. That is, for the 16GB version, customers will pay $199, for the 32GB – $299, while the 64GB will cost $399. This time, however, iPhone 4S will be sold in white and black.

iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS will not be withdrawn from the market, company officials announced. The market launch will take place on October 14 and pre-orders can be made by Wednesday, October 7.

iPhone 4S model will be faster, thinner and with a larger screen. This should help Apple keep the distance from its main rival, Samsung Electronics.

The new Apple has an A5 processor, same as the CPU on iPhone 2. In terms of download speed, it is 14.4 Mbps, twice faster than the iPhone 4.

The smartphone has an 8 MP camera, the wireless connectivity has been improved and it comes with longer battery life.

When referring to the video, we noted that the iPhone 4S can record video HD at 1080p resolution, an improvement from iPhone 4, which records at 720p.

“IPhone 4S register your voice commands as if you were a child or a foreign language speaker”, writes engadget.com.

The shares of Apple continue to dive, Bloomberg notes. Apple shares fell by 3.319%, during the new product presentation. At the end of stock market session on Tuesday, Apple stock is listed on Nasdaq at $372.50.

Apple revealed the new version of the iPhone after 15 months of waiting, hoping that it will keep the leading position compared to competitors that sell models equipped with the Android operating system made by Google.

During the event, Tim Cook said that Apple has expanded its chain of stores last week in China and Hong Kong.

The new CEO talked about the MacBook Pro and iMac, boasting their speed. CEO of the most admired brand in the world didn’t forget to mention the growing sales of Apple. “More than half of iPhones sold are iPhone 4”, he said.

iPhone, considered a landmark of the smartphone market, was a huge success since its launch in 2007, but competed against a strong Android mobile operating system, which leads the U.S. market with a share of 43%, according to data from market research company Nielsen.

iPhone ranks second in the U.S. market, with 28%.

Worldwide, the iPhone shipments rose 9.1% in the second quarter, while those of Nokia fell 30%. Apple has taken the leading position in this segment with a 18.4% share, ahead of Nokia.
Samsung moved up to second place with a 17.8% share in the global market.
