Iran is Hoping for More Talks Regarding its Nuclear Program

According to the foreign minister of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, positive dialogue was held with his counterpart of EU which made him hopeful that more talks would be carried out in future regarding the nuclear program of Iran which in an effort to settle some issues that are still not resolved.

He also commented that Iran was always willing to talk with the five permanent members of United Nations Security Council, and including Germany in the talks.  Previously Salehi headed the atomic energy of Iran.  He was quite hopeful that the meeting with European Union foreign policy head, Lady Ashton will help in supporting the work for coming up meeting with UNSC members as well as Germany.

Talks were held by Iran regarding its nuclear program in Istanbul in the month of January which included Britain, United States, China, France, Russia and Germany but it didn’t lead anywhere and ended without much development.

One week after the dialogue in Istanbul, Salehi took charge on 30th of Jan as the foreign minister of Iran and had his initial talk with Lady Ashton during the meeting in Geneva.

In this meeting she emphasized to move seriously regarding the talks and resolving the issue and also conveyed her disappointment regarding the talks in Istanbul.

Iran has stressed multiple times that its program is not destructive and is for catering energy needs but the security council of United Nations has placed sanctions on Iran for not stopping its nuclear program, as the western countries think that the reason for its existence is to develop a nuclear weapon.

Salehi also commented that safety and reliability was their priority before starting up a reactor.

He was also questioned regarding the detention of two Americans who were suspected of spying during July 2009 at the border who pleaded not guilty.
