Panicked and shocked, residents of the Ural region have imagined there was a plane crash or the end of the world, when a white light suddenly illuminated everything around them, followed by violent explosions that blew the windows of their building. “I was at home. There was a flash of light. I ran to the balcony and there was a trace in the sky, like a from plane, but much larger. My first impression was that a plane had crashed,” said Dmitri Tourkine correspondent of the Vesti TV channel, based in Chelyabinsk.
“Firstly, there was a light, unreal, which illuminated all the rooms on the right side of the school. This kind of light does not exist in life, only when it is the end of the world, then there was a trail of smoke like a plane, but ten times bigger,” said a teacher from Chelyabinsk, Valentina Nikolayeva, for the Lifenews site. A video shows children panicking and screaming after the powerful explosion blew the windows of their school.
“While I was dressing up, there was a very bright light, I couldn’t understand, I thought it was fireworks. Then, loud explosions blew out the windows,” said another resident of Chelyabinsk, Evgueni Gorochko, quoted by the Kommersant daily, adding that telephone communications were almost blocked in the city. “Different kinds of gray matter falling from the sky. It is very scary when your house starts to shake, and you can not do anything! The horror…” said another resident, Yuri Panov.
“There was no evacuation of the population, the level of radioactivity is normal. We urge you not to panic,” said the local branch of the Ministry of Emergency Situations on its site. A representative of Rosatom, the Russian Agency for Atomic Energy, said that nuclear facilities in the region were not affected.
The Russian Ministry of Defense indicated that military installations had not suffered any damage, and sent reconnaissance groups to the presumed location of falling meteorite fragments. The phenomenon has also been observed in several neighboring regions and in Kazakhstan.
