Scientists have revealed the existence of a vaccine that kills 90% of cancers using the body’s natural defense mechanisms. Experts say that this treatment has already had success in some patients, healing after only two doses. They estimated that the vaccine will be widely available within six years. ImMucin vaccine works by directing the patient’s immune system to the tumor, which it attacks and destroys it. Typically, the cancer cells spread in the body because the immune system don’t perceives them as a threat, unlike viruses and bacteria.
The new vaccine uses a molecule called MUC1, which is found in 90% of cancers, to “train” the immune system to recognize cancer cells. Scientists have discovered that by injecting into the body of an appropriate level of MUC1 molecule, it induces immune system to fight against the cancer cells.
In an experiment conducted at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, 10 patients suffering from myeloma, a type of cancer where an accumulation of malfunctioning or “cancerous” plasma cells, were injected with ImMucin. After 2-4 doses of treatment, seven of them showed a strengthening of the immune system, and 3 of them were completely healed. The vaccine is designed to be used by people already suffering from cancer, not to prevent disease.
It is believed that the effectiveness is higher for cancers detected early and to prevent relapse in patients already cured of cancer. Now, scientists from Vaxil Biotherapeutics, the company that developed the vaccine, and the University of Tel Aviv have tested the vaccine on several types of cancer and several patients. If the tests will confirm the positive results achieved so far, the vaccine promises to save many lives from this terrible disease.
