Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron said that Muammar “Gaddafi must leave immediately” and asked his supporters to “leave him before it’s too late”, in a joint statement issued Monday, the day before the meeting of the “Contact Group” on Libya.
French President and British Prime Minister also requested the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) to “establish a national political dialogue” and to “organize the transition” in Libya.
“At the conference in London, the international community will have the opportunity to express their support for the Libyan people in their struggle aimed at removing a violent dictatorship and creating favorable conditions which will enable them to decide on their future”, write the two leaders.
In their view, as “Arab League resolution stresses, the current regime has lost all legitimacy. Gaddafi must, therefore, go immediately”.
“We call on all his supporters to leave before it’s too late. We call on all Libyans who believe that Muammar Gaddafi leads Libya to disaster to mobilize now for a transition process,” they added.
They’ve also said that the process “could be organized around the National Transitional Council, with a pioneering role representing the civil society and all those who want to participate in the process of transition to democracy”.
“We ask them to set up a capable national political dialogue leading to a representative transition, a constitutional reform and free elections”, they said. Approximately 40 countries are expected on Tuesday in London for the first meeting of the Contact Group, which deals with the “political pilotage” of the military attacks that are now under NATO command and preparing the political future of Libya.
