Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assured the Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmud, that Moscow is willing to mediate with the UN and African Union the Libyan conflict, after a ceasefire will be agreed, informs Reuters and EFE.
“The most important thing is to end the bloodshed and suffering endured by the peaceful population of the country”, Lavrov stated during a telephone conversation with al-Baghdadi.
“We need for the UN Security Council resolutions to be fully met and ensure a ceasefire, particularly in regard to the bombings of Misrata and other cities”, were the conditions Lavrov requested to be met in order for him to participate in mediation.
“This way there will be created the necessary framework to achieve a ceasefire”, said the Russian foreign minister, who underlined the importance of all parties to cooperate with international organizations to end the humanitarian crisis in Libya. “Russia will work with UN and African Union to resolve the situation in a political and diplomatic way”, Lavrov added.
Al-Baghdadi has argued, in turn, for a negotiated solution to the conflict between the Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, and the rebels. Libyan Minister stressed, however, that authorities in the North African country are willing to fully implement resolutions 1970 and 1973 of the United Nations.
