Denounced by the Western countries, Syrian crackdown of the mass revolt has divided the political forces of the country. Yesterday, 200 members of the Baath Party, have resigned in protest to the violence perpetrated by security forces, according to Euronews.
It would have been a hard to imagine gesture before the start of the movement to challenge the regime in power in Damascus, on March 15.
But following the bloody suppression of protests that resulted in more than 500 dead, those elected in the Deraa province and neighboring regions wanted their voices to be heard. Same as the 28 Baath members who left the party in Banias.
“Security services have demolished the values on which we grew up. We denounce and condemn what has happened and, without regret, we announce our resignation from the party. Practices of security services against citizens in Banias and neighboring villages, especially at Baida, are contrary to all human values and the Baath party slogans”, it said in a text signed by the resigning members of the party.
No agreement at UN
Meanwhile, the draft of the European resolution condemning the repression in Syria was rejected yesterday by Russia, China and Lebanon. Officials in Moscow and Beijing opposed any interference in internal affairs of Syria.
Russia and China blocked a proposed statement by Britain, France, Germany and Portugal, which condemns the military intervention and shooting the protestors in Syria.
After discussions behind closed doors, the Western countries on the Security Council have called for a public meeting to be able to express disapproval toward the repression triggered by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
In the absence of agreement at the United Nations, European Union and the United States could impose their own sanctions to the government in Damascus, regime that has not hesitated to use guns on the demonstrators.
