Talas Typhoon in Japan: 20 dead and 50 missing

Talas typhoon JapanTalas typhoon has killed at least 20 people and caused the disappearance of over 50 people in western Japan, affected by heavy rains and violent gusts of wind, authorities announced on Sunday.

Talas, which arrived in Japan Saturday, recorded gusts of over 60 m/h, causing heavy rains that led to flooding of rivers and caused landslides on the island of Shikoku and western Honshu.

The government has set up emergency teams as the typhoon, one of the most violent in recent years, increased in intensity. Thousands of people are isolated and the roads state makes the arrival of intervention teams very difficult.

According to Kyodo news agency, at least 20 people were killed, 50 are missing and 3,600 are isolated due to landslides and collapsed bridges.

The public broadcaster NHK has previously announced a number of 17 dead, 43 missing and 98 wounded. About 30,000 people were evacuated in western Japan, according to agency for fire and disaster management.

In Nara Prefecture, two people died and seven were missing after a house in the village of Totsukawa was taken by a river, according to the departmental authorities. In Wakayama neighboring department, there were ten dead and 32 missing, police said.

Television stations showed images of landslides covering wooden houses in the mountains, and torrents of mud flooding the streets and taking cars away.

The typhoon moved north in the Sea of Japan Sunday, according to Japan Meteorological Agency.

National meteorological agency warned of forming of other torrents of mud, in the west after heavy rain were recorded, which on Tuesday reached levels in some areas over 70 inches.
