China reacted strongly after the publication in the New York Times of an investigation about Chinese premier Wen Jiabao who flaunts his modest origins, but in fact would have a hidden fortune amounting to $2.7 billion.

“Such articles are denigrating China,” a Chinese diplomacy spokesman said today. Beijing has blocked access to the New York Times website, says French daily Le Monde.

Chinese premier mother was a simple teacher who taught in northern China, and his father raised pigs during the Maoist revolution, writes New York Times. The article published yesterday, dedicated to the Chinese prime minister, upset Chinese authorities.

Now 90 years old, the mother of the Chinese government head has survived not only poverty, but became very rich. U.S. publication cites an investigation of five years ago with the central figure the mother of the Chinese prime minister, Yang Zhiyun. According to the investigation, she was engaged in a $120-million business.

The names of the Chinese premier’s family members are often hidden behind several investments funds owned with friends, work colleagues and associates, according to the New York Times.

According to the sources, Wen Jiabao’s family has interests in banks, jewelry, resorts, telecommunication and infrastructure projects and sometimes use offshore entities. The most powerful Chinese state companies which largely depend on premier’s decisions are involved in these investment vehicles. His younger brother has a waste treatment company that benefited from contracts with the government worth $30 million, his wife made a fortune in jewelry business and his son saw a huge success when it sold to a Hong Kong tycoon the technology company of the family.

New York Times also mentions that back in June Bloomberg published an investigation immediately censored in China on the wealth of the Vice President Xi Jinping’ family. He would next month take the reins of the Communist Party and become president.

New York Times assesses Chinese prime minister’s family fortune at $2.7 billion.
