Gangnam Style hits 2 Billion Views, Breaks YouTube Records

Psy Gangnam StylePsy’s “Gangnam Style” has now surpassed the 2 billion mark on YouTube, nearly 23 months after it was uploaded, as announced by its music label, YG Entertainment on Saturday. The megahit viral video continues to be far ahead of Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” which has currently slightly more than 1.04 billion views.

To his delight, the phenomenal South Korean pop singer thanked his fans all over the world via Twitter.

“Very honorable and burdensome numbers. With the appreciation, I’ll come back soon with more joyful one!” Psy (@psy_oppa) tweeted. Gangnam Style is enjoying more than 2,002,000,000 YouTube views as of this posting.

Apparently, Psy is referring to his upcoming song “Hangover,” a hip hop tune in collaboration with American rapper Snoop Dogg. The said song and its music video will have the world premiere on Sunday, June 8, during the live airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC.

The 4-minute viral video was uploaded on July 15, 2012, but still continues to break records after it became the first YouTube video to have 1 billion views on December 21, 2012. That was a month after it surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” music video as the most watched YouTube video.

Gangnam Style had a strong cultural impact worldwide and became a household name. Parody videos from everywhere from around the world were uploaded on YouTube, and featured young children, teenagers, famous celebrities, athletes, and even politicians dancing to the tune. The famous K-Pop singer had live concerts in Asia, North America, Australia, and Europe. Psy even made guest performances on TV shows, including The Ellen Show where he teaches Ellen and Britney Spears how to dance to his music.

In April 2013, Psy released a follow-up single titled “Gentleman.” Despite the song being dubbed as “similar” to Gangnam Style, it holds the YouTube record for most number of views in its first 24 hours. The “Gentleman” music video is also the fastest overall video to reach 100 million views, 200 million views, and 300 million views.
