Called “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald (April 25th, 1917 to June 25th, 1996) was the most famous jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, Ella Fitzgerald won 13 Grammy Awards and has sold over 40 million copies of more than 70 albums, according to the official website of the artist.

With a three-octave vocal range, Ella Fitzgerald was known for the purity of interpretation and the ability to improvise. She could sing ballads, jazz pieces and could imitate any instrument in an orchestra. She has worked with leading musicians from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman.

She played all over the world, and her audience was as diverse as her singing capabilities. She sang to all people, rich and poor, of all races, religions and nationalities. She was one of the most beloved and popular artists in the world.

Her career was interrupted in 1966 because of a serious eye disease. In the ’70s recorded she several albums (“Take Love Easy” with Joe Pass, “Ella and Oscar” Oscar Peterson, “A Classy Pair” with Count Basie), and in 1992 she had her last concert .

She was confined in a wheelchair after having her legs amputated below the knees due to diabetes. On June 15 June 15, 1996 she was taken outside where she sat for an hour. When she was wheeled back in the house she said: “I’m ready to go now” and died in her home at the age of 79.
