Pinterest Launches Guided Search, New Feature for Easier Search

pinterest Guided SearchPinterest launched a new feature on Thursday called Guided Search. The formal launch was led by Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann during a press event held at Pinterest’s headquarters in San Francisco, California. A blog post in line with this update is also posted on Pinterest’s official blog.

“Guided Search helps you find things when you didn’t know how to ask the question in the first place,” Silbermann said, adding that around 75 percent of the social networking site’s current traffic is from mobile devices. A food-related search demo was shown during the launch, showing how the feature works.

According to Pinterest, pinners can now enjoy a better search method on the site. Unlike before, users can narrow down their search and can find the photos of the things they want to see in a more accurate way. Once pinners enter a keyword, Guided Search will quickly show related photos.

As an example, the word “veggie” leads to several different results such as “burger” and “gardening.” Likewise, “burger” also has many suggestions such as different choices of veggie burgers. Pinners who want to have a new hairstyle can now easily find various photos of other users’ collections and pins.

Guided Search serves as an update to the Pinterest app in Apple App Store and Google Play. As of this moment, this new feature is available in English and to mobile users only. There is no report as to whether it will be available in other languages, but Pinterest said web users can also enjoy it soon.

Despite being less popular than Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest has now more than 750 million boards with 30 billion Pins. Since its launch in March 2010, Pinterest has been popular with females (especially entrepreneurs) who want to share photos of their products such as flowers, food, and fashion items.

Meanwhile, Pinterest also launched Custom Categories in support to the 32 categories available which Silbermann admitted being not sufficient to categorize all the items posted on their site. In addition, Related Pins has now a wider coverage as they will be included in more than 90 percent of the Pins.
