Twenty MLB players, including Alex Rodriguez, could be suspended

Alex RodriguezMajor League Baseball (MLB) might suspend more than 20 players, among them the New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, for violations of anti-doping rules in an investigation based in Miami, writes ESPN.

According to ESPN, the founder of Miami clinic at the center of the scandal, Tony Bosch, will cooperate with MLB investigators and will provide evidence that will allow the league to suspend the players. Biogenesis anti-aging clinic is suspected of trafficking doping products, supplying hundreds of players.

If around 20 athletes will be suspended in the coming weeks, it would be the largest anti- doping operation in the history of American sports. According to ESPN, Alex Rodriguez and the Milwaukee star Ryan Braun could be suspended for 100 matches. An MLB season includes 162 games.  The two players, in connection with the case since January, denied any involvement. Alex Rodriguez is also known for the romantic relationships he had with Madonna and Cameron Diaz.

Other MLB players such as Melky Cabrera – Toronto Blue Jays, Bartolo Colon – Oakland Athletics, Ryan Braun – Milwakee Brewers and Nelson Cruz – Texas Rangers could be suspended. Cabrera and Colon have been suspended last season. MLB announced in January the extension of the anti-doping operations with unannounced blood tests.

Michael Weiner, executive director of Major League Players Association, cautioned against any prejudice against the players before an official announcement regarding the outcome of the doping probe.

“The commissioner’s office has assured us that no decisions regarding discipline have been made or will be made until those interviews are completed. It would be unfortunate if anyone prejudged those investigations,” Weiner said.

He added: “The union has every interest in both defending the rights of players and in defending the integrity” of the joint drug program. “We trust that the commissioner’s office shares those interests.”

ESPN reported yesterday that Anthony Bosch, the head of the Miami anti-aging clinic, has agreed to cooperate with anti-doping investigators.
